Abstract

Objective:This study was carried out to determine seroprevalence of Q fever listeriosis, toxoplasmosis and cystic echinococcosis among pet veterinarians, veterinary technicians and animal lovers who are in close contact with animals. Method:A total of 127 sera consisting of 88 veterinarians, 25 veterinary technicians and 14 animal lovers were tested for Q fever by using Indirect Fluorescence Antibody Test (IFAT), for listeriosis by Osebold Agglutination Test (OAT), for toxoplasmosis by Sabin Feldman dye test (SFDT), for cystic echinococcosis by Indirect Hemaglutination Test (IHA). Results:Twentyseven out of 88 (30.6%) veterinarians, eight out of 25 (32%) veterinary technicians, and four out of 14 (28.5%) animal lovers and one out of 20 (%5) control group were found to be positive for the presence of C. burnetii IgG antibodies. By using OAT, listeriosis seropositivity were determinated for 27 out of 88 (30.6%) veterinarians, nine out of 25 (36%)veterinary technicians, three out of 14(21.4%) animal lovers and one out of 20 control group. SFDT results showed that 28, 4% of veterinarians, 16% of veterinary technicians, 50% of animal lovers and 6 out of 20 (%30) control group were positive. Only one serum sample belong to veterinarians was seropositive at 1/128 titer for cystic echinococcosis by IHAtest. Conclusion:In this study, it was determined that there was a high seroprevalence for Q fever and listeriosis between pet veterinarians, veterinary technicians and animal lovers who works in Ankara provice and the result was statisticallysignificant when compared with the control group (P
