Abstract
Some universities have started to carry out all or some of the courses in associate, undergraduate and graduate degree programs and compulsory common courses through distance education. The reason for this change is to respond to increasing student needs, to provide them with a qualified education and to support the individual development required by the modern age. The pandemic distance education seen in our country since March 2020 has made the focus of education. This situation has caused universities to review the distance education centers and their application in depth. The aim of this study is to evaluate the distance education application of foreign language course, which is one of the compulsory common courses in university curricula, based on the student opinions. The model of the study is descriptive and the method is qualitative. The universe of the study consists of 100 students. 50 of these students are students who study in the first year of the faculties of science, engineering, medicine, education and law at Gazi University in the 2016-2017 academic year. The other 50 are students who graduated from the same faculties in the 2015-2016 academic year. The data were collected by the interview technique. The data collection tool is a semi-structured interview form. Content analysis technique was used in the analysis of the data. According to the findings, there are more negative student views against both distance and face to face education applications of foreign language courses. Similar findings were reached in both groups. In terms of foreign language courses, the students stated that the content dimension is simple and insufficient, that the instructors do not use effective teaching methods and techniques in the teaching learning process dimension, and that the exams are simple in the measurement and evaluation dimension. Taking these findings into consideration by the institutions implementing distance education, the practitioners and the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) can contribute to improving the quality of education.
