Functions of Curses in Eastern Groups of Turkey Turkish Dialects

Abstract

Up to now, studies were carried out on the curses generally in the public science and many classifications were made according to their meaning, subject and manner. However; no study on the functions of curses in the spoken language was carried out. In this article, it was revealed with a classification test that we made on this subject that the curses are used in the spoken language with many functions except bad-pray. In this classification, main groups were determined by basing on target person towards whom bad wish in the curses is tended, and sub-groups were formed within the main groups via linguistic and non-linguistic context. Accordingly, it was determined that the curses are used in the spoken language in these functions: curse, oath, regret and swear.
