Abstract

Many Western voyagers and scientists who happened to pass Caucasus in the18th and 19th century left behind detailed works describing the geography and the societies of this geography as legacy. Thanks to the comprehensive works of Western voyagers such as Johann Anton Güldenstädt, Jacob Reineggs, M. De Peysonnel, Julius von Klaproth, Marie Felicite Brosset, Robert Sears, Robert Lyall, D. Freshfield, Ernest Chantre and Cornelis de Bruijn, Caucasian cultural, administrative and demographic situation passed to next generations. Those writings about the local history and the Russian occupation of the region were completely neutral resources, which made an important contribution to the creation of the Caucasian image on European minds. Our point in this research is how the Western voyagers visited to the region in the18th and 19th century pictured and transferred the claims and myths on Karachay-Balkar's ancient roots through their travel notes, both literary and scientific, to the readers of that times To sum up, our aim is to transmit the trails and views related to the ethnogenesis of Karachay-Balkar some of which were mentioned in the works of the voyagers we have listed previously.
