Abstract
In this paper, the social and economic states of Selendi at the beginning of the Reformation (Tanzimat) period have been studied.Selendi, being a town of Manisa today, was a town centre pertaining to the Denizli administrative district of Aydın Province. At that time, Selendi consisted of fifteen residential areas including the town centre, and all the people in Selendi were Turkish and it was a place where 1790 people were estimated to be living. When the householders' names are studied, it will be seen that the most used names were Mustafa, Mehmet, Ahmet and İbrahim. Ninety-one percent of the householders were busy with agriculture and were landowners. Each of the households including an ironmonger, an imam, an official records keeper and two barbers had lands, but a small number of householders had no lands but just labourers. Each of the households had seventy-two acres of land. Although the lands being owned were seen abundant in acres, they were infertile. Householders were mainly busy with agriculture and livestock. Each house had five or six cattle and three or four sheep or goats. That's why stock farming was the most important source of income after agriculture. So it means that Selendi at the beginning of the Reformation (Tanzimat) period had a population of villagers and its economy was mainly dependent on agriculture.
