Özet

II.

Abstract

The Royal Medical School “Mekteb-i Tıbbiye-i Şâhâne” building founded at Haydarpasa in Üsküdar by Sultan Abdülhamit The 2nd is significant in respect to both Ottoman history of medicine and architecture. However, the history of the Haydarpasa Medical School has not been studied in detail. In this study, information and arguments about moving the Medical School from Demirkapi on the European side to Haydarpasa on the Anatolian side of Istanbul, construction of the school building and clinics and moving the school back to the European side of Istanbul are discussed. Attention is drawn to the argument related with Uskudar as a rural district of Istanbul in early 20th century, proposed as a justification in discussions about moving the Medical School back to the European side of Istanbul. A present day evaluation about the function of the Haydarpasa Medical School building, together with the neighboring historical buildings is opened to discussion. Photographs of the monumental Medical School building reproduced from the Yıldız Albums kept in the Rare Books Library of Istanbul University, maps depicting the surrounding historical hospitals and today’s photographs of the area are presented to guide the consideration of the authors.
