Abstract

The term “Turk” mentioned in the oldest Chinese texts refers to the united Turkish Tribes. In other words, the meaning of the term “Turk” comprises of the 24 Oguz clans and stands for each of these clans’ patronymic names. The term experiencing a sad and enduring adventure throughout the ages, is only used twice in the names of the states among sixteen ones which were founded by Turks. These states are Gokturks and the Repub lic of Turkey. The rest of the states were occasionally named and called with the names of their founding families. Furthermore, it is seen that the term “Turk” is used to mean “ignorant, villager, illiterate” and it stands for some pejorative meanings in the course of the history. The most apparent examples are seen in the periods of Turkish Empires, most notably in the Ottoman Period. The most pejorative usages of the term can be traced in the administration of the Porte under the domination of Devshirmes. This paper examines this sorrowful adventure of the term “Turk”
