Abstract
Background and design: Clinical samples from skin, hair and nail with suspected dermatophytosis were obtained from the patients applied to the dermatology department of Medical School at the Trabzon, between January 1997 and June 1998. Results: A total of 652 samples obtained from 598 patients were examined by direct microscopy and culture for the presence and identification of fungal organisms. Of the positive samples (48%) were identified to contain dermatophytes by culture while an additional 17 samples were negative by direct microscopic examination also but positive by culture. In this study, T.pedis was the most common agent identified in superficial mycosis followed by T.inguinalis, T.unguium and the others with negligible frequency. The types and the rates of dermatophytes isolated in cultures were as follows: T.rubrum (69.5%), E.floccosum (18.1%), T.mentagrophytes (9.4%), M.audouini (1.3%), T.violaceum (1.0%), T.tonsurans (0.3%) and M.ferrugineum (0.3%).
