Abstract
In the geological time scale, drainage basins record the interrelationship of the factors that play a role in the formation of the earth. The interaction between analyzes of drainage basins and geomorphological measurements provides an opportunity to evaluate the evolution and processes of the land. The aim of this study is to estimate the long-term erosion rates of the basins in the Samanlı Mountains and to try to evaluate the dominant difference in the geomorphological appearance by using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) based, morphometric and surface analysis. The swath profile, normalized river profile, minimum eroded volume (Ebulk), hypsometric curve (Hc) and integral (Hi), drainage basin asymmetry (AF), surface roughness and surface index were applied. Thus, it was tried to obtain information about the recent evolution and the processes on the Samanlı Mountains. According to the results obtained, the average river concavity factor of the central part of the Samanlı Mountains, which shows the low plateau feature, is 51.11 and the average hypsometric integral values are 0.35. In the western (Armutlu Peninsula) and eastern parts of the Samanlı Mountains, the river concavity factor is 21.16 and 25.35 on average, respectively. The hypsometric integral values are also represented by higher values than the central part, with an average of 0.48 and 0.49, respectively. The normal faults extending East-West from the west of the Samanli Mountains to the middle section, the Esenköy and Yalova fault and the effect of faults seen in the eastern part, surface roughness, hypsometric integral and surface index values are seen along a roughly East-West line. These surfaces, which are a sign of a high degree of incision, are also notable for their high local relief values, knickpoint and long-term erosion rates. The Marmara Sea, whose geological evolution has started with the settlement of the North Anatolian Fault in the region since the Neogene, forms the base level for the streams on the mass. With the development of the Marmara Sea, long-term erosion of the mass must have taken shape.
