Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of 1 µg kg-1 remifentanil iv administered prior to induction on the dose of thiopental necessary for anaesthesia induction, duration of convulsion and hemodynamic variables during electroconvulsive therapyTwo anaesthesia induction techniques were used in a randomized, prospective and crossover manner in 15 patients ASA I-II, between the ages of 26-44 undergoing electroconvulsive therapy for their psychiatric diseases. Same patients received thiopental for anesthesia induction in one session (Group T) and remifentanil 1 µg kg-1 iv followed by thiopental dose in another session (Group TR). Thiopental requirement for induction and duration of convulsions were recorded. Heart rate, systolic and diastolic blood pressures were also recorded before and after electroconvulsive therapy at one minute intervals for 5 minutes. Thiopental dose was 30 % lower in Group TR (295 mg) when compared with Group T (205 mg) (P
