Abstract

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is characterized by demyelination of different parts of the brain and spinal cord. Stress such as a surgical procedure or general anaesthesia may be associated with an acute exacerbation of the disease. Perioperative hyperpyrexia has been suggested as a possible etiology of postoperative multiple sclerosis exacerbation. Medications used to treat MS (corticosteroids, baclofen, anticonvulsants, cyclophosphamide) may have anaesthetic implications. We present a case report of a patient with MS undergoing bladder reconstruction highlighting anaesthetic consideration for patients with MS.
