Abstract

Smyrna, which was one of the most important port cities of Asia Minor during the Hellenistic and Roman periods, has undergone political and cultural changes at the end of Antiquity, like many other contemporary cities. From the beginning of the 4th century AD, when Christians had the opportunity to live their beliefs with the Edict of Milan, to the Arab raids that have been efficient throughout the ancient world in the 7th century AD, the culture of early Christianity emerged in Smyrna. However, in this period, it can be seen that pagan beliefs and culture have not completely disappeared. A terracotta oinophoros discovered during excavations in the Basmane district of the ancient city of Smyrna, bears traces of the city’s transformation and identity at the end of antiquity. By interpreting the data provided by this oinophoros in the historical context and with similar examples, it has been attempted to reach indications of the cultural life of Smyrna in late antiquity.
