Abstract

Abuse is series of behaviours that aflect the physical, psychological and social development of the children. Literature reveals that children from lower socio-economic status are more exposed to abuse, but it is not known enough to what extent children of higher socio-economic status families are abused physically, emotionally and sexually. Purpose of this research is to examine the cases of abuse that the adolescents from dijferent socio-economic levels faced in their childhood, and putforth the risk factors and problems in their families. In order to conduct the research schools were determined according to TÜİK (Turkish Statistical Institute) data and 331 adolescents were reached ofwhich 165 werefrom Altındağ and 166 from Çankaya. Childhood trauma scale was used in the research. This scale is comprised of the physical, emotional and sexual abuse sub-scales. 1t measures the past abuse in dimensions. The data obtained were processed via SPSS (version 15). Analyses such as %, test, and ANOVAs, kruskal wallis, correlation, and qi-square were used according to the quality of the variables. Thefact that the physical and emotional trauma scores appeared out to be almost equal at Altındağ and Çankaya indicates that physical and emotional abuse are seen not only in the lower socio-economic level, but also in the families in Çankaya whose level ofeducation and income is higher. Besides, it appears out that the adolescents at Altındağ who states that the income ofthefamily is either 740 TL or below were more abused physically and emotionally compared to the other income groups. The research results show that sexual abuse is seen more at Çankaya; and economic abuse is seen more atAltındağ. The study indicated that children of the families from 76 higher socio-economic levels are also exposed to physical, emotional and sexual abuse. Thus, social work practices with families should be constructed as including the two socio-economic structures.
