Özet
Osmanlı Hükümdarı Orhan Bey, fetihlerle komşu ve rakip oldukları Bizanslılarla ilişkilerini, savaş, evlilik ve diplomasi gibi yollarla sürdürmüştür. OsmanlıBizans münasebetlerindeki en önemli husus hiç şüphesiz evliliklerdir. Osmanlılar, taht kavgaları, Selanik meselesi, Sırplarla olan mücadelede Bizans'a yardımcı olmuşlardır. Bizans İmparator naibi ve sonradan İmparator olan Kantakuzenos taht mücadeledesinde Osmanlıların desteğini kazanabilmek için Kilisenin muhalefetine rağmen kızı Theodora'yı Osmanlı Beyi Orhan'a vermiştir. Bu evlilik Bizans için bir yardım temini gayesi ile yapılmış olsa da Osmanlı-Bizans ilişkilerinde eşitlemeyi de beraberinde getirmiştir. Osmanlılar, Orhan Bey'le ilk kez üst seviyede siyasi bir evlilik yapmıştır. İki tarafın katılımıyla düğün Silivri'de bir merasimle yapılmış gelin Bursa'ya getirilmiştir. Theodora Hıristiyan olarak kalması şartıyla Orhan'la evlendirilmiş ve hayatı boyunca da inancı üzere yaşamıştır.
Abstract
The Ottoman ruler Orhan Bey maintained relations with the Byzantines (theybecame neighbors and enemies with as a result of conquests) by means of war,diplomacy and marriage. The most important aspect of the Ottoman-Byzantine relationsis undoubtedly marriage. The Ottomans helped the Byzantines with the fightsfor the throne, the Thessaloniki issue, and in the struggle with the Serbs. Despiteopposition from the Church, the Byzantine Emperor Regent, and later the EmperorKantakuzenos, married his daughter Theodora to the Ottoman Bey Orhan to gainthe support of the Ottomans. Although this marriage aimed at obtaining support ofByzantium, it brought equality to the Ottoman-Byzantine relations with it. WithOrhan Bey, the Ottomans had a high-ranking political marriage for the first time.The wedding ceremony was held in Silivri, with attendance from both sides, and thebride was brought to Bursa. Theodore was married to Orhan, with the condition thatshe remained a Christian; she practiced her faith for the rest of her life.
