Abstract
The classical understanding of science is based on the mechanistic view of Newton and the Cartesianphilosophy of Descartes and at the same time, these two significant assumptions should also be basis ofsocial sciences for acquiring a scientific quality. According to the classical conceptualisation of science, the human being has been seen as a machine independent from his/her environment. This idea isrequired to be looked at for the foundations of the medical model of disability which is criticizedover the social model of disability. The social model criticizes the medical model due to the fact thatthe latter evaluates the disability as a special and/or an abnormal situation, an individual tragedyby focusing on the disabled individual and his/her family but ignoring the broad social, economicand environmental factors. According to the social model, disability should be considered by takingthe interaction between the individual and his/her large social milieu into account. Thus, for makingvisible, discussing, and solving the problems of the disabled in the public sphere, all the social factorscould be politicized. The aim of this article is to raise awareness toward social model in social sciences.
