Abstract
Memory is the term that is attributed to a part of an individual's organism. In this sense, memory is the place to store that an individual has learned. Memory also constitutes a reference to an active form of recollection that is built and shared as a result of a collectively-experienced social event. From a social perspective memory emerges as a collective creation that is shared and conveyed into the future by masses which have gone through the same events, phenomena or situations. In this light, memory traces of the victims of the Marmara Earthquake of August the 19th 1999 constitute a significant amount of collective memory components that should be included to the scope of collective memory due to the horrific amount of losses, casualties, traumas and sorrows it caused in the lives of thousands of people. The memories and memory patterns of the victims of the disaster in question are most visible and salient in the news covering the yearly commemorative services of the Earthquake, and thus, their continuation and transfer to future generations is also guaranteed. In this study, we scrutinize the news covering the annual commemorative services of the Marmara Earthquake in order to determine the nature of these services, the memories of victims that are selected and included to the news and the memory dynamics that are processed in these coverages. Additionally, we also try to answer the question of whether the coverage of this disaster's commemorative services is made to remember and remind of past events, or whether these memorials take the shape of some bitter reckoning of the past.
