Abstract

Hyperkeratosis of the nipple and areola is a rare and self-limited dermatosis with an unknown etiology. Typical clinical manifestation of the disease is bilateral or unilateral, diffuse, hyperpigmented plaques with verrucous appearance. Most of the patients are females, but rare male cases have been reported. Although the etiology of hyperkeratosis of the nipple and areola has not been fully elucidated yet, there are reports in the literature which suggest that hyperkeratosis of the nipple and areola is a variant of epidermal nevus or is associated with diseases, including Darier’s disease, acanthosis nigricans or lymphoma. With typical clinical findings hyperkeratosis of the nipple and areola is among the easily recognizable diseases in dermatological practice. Herein, we report a case of hyperkeratosis of the nipple and areola in a 22-year-old female with hyperpigmented verrucous plaque on her left nipple and areola, of which histo- pathological findings also support the diagnosis.
