Abstract

The meat industry has a great place in terms of the food industry. In this study, disintegration of biological waste sludge produced in meat industry wastewater treatment plant was studied using pulsed electric field (PEF) as a new technique and subsequently aerobic stabilization are investigated. In this study, the effect of voltage value and number of the treatment on sludge disintegration were investigated. The highest soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) was obtained with 36 kV voltage values and 2 treatment numbers during PEF operation. After PEF treatment, the SCOD, total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), protein and polysaccharide concentrations in sludge’s supernatant increased by 200%, 128%, 141%, 142% and 316%, respectively. Depending on CST and filtration datas, the filterability of the sludge was also affected positively. The digester filled with PEF disintegrated sludge had higher stabilizasyon efficiency in terms of TCOD, SCOD, protein, polysaccharide, total solid (TS), suspended solid (SS) and volatile suspended solid (VSS) removal efficiencies than control one during the operation period. In the digester with PEF disintegrated sludge, TCOD, SCOD, protein, polysaccharide, SS, VSS, TS and volatile total solid (VTS) removal efficiencies increased by 6.6%, 15%, 25.0%, 14.4%, 7.0%, 7.0%, 2.0% and 3.0 %, respectively, compared to the control reactor.
