Abstract

Sayyid Ahmad Khan, an Indian pioneer of the modernistera had a versatile personality: on one handhe wrote several volumes of a modernist commentaryon the Qur?an and established educational institutionsto publicize his novel ideas on the other. Inthese works he sought to harmonize the Islamic faithwith the scientific views, i.e. natural theology and politicallyprogressive ideas of his time. He publishedmany writings promoting liberal and rational interpretationsof the Holy Qur'an as he was troubled by therigidity of the orthodox outlook of the Muslims. A distinguishedscholar, he was a progressive thinker whoplayed a major role in promoting social, scientific, and economic development of Indian Muslims. Hemostly wrote on Islamic Theology/Kalam; Commentaryof the Qur'an/Tafsîr; and addressed the requirementof social reforms and thus wrote a commentaryon Bible. However, his liberal views were met withcriticism by the Muslim clergy urging Sir Sayyid todecide to cease discussing religion and focus onpromoting education. Therefore his supreme interestwas education--in its widest sense. In politics he tried his best to convince the British, the colonial power that Muslims were actually notagainst them, and he persuaded the Muslims repeatedlyto befriend the British to achieve theirgoals. He also wrote many books and publishedjournals to remove the misunderstanding. Sir Sayyidasked the Muslims of his time not to participatein politics unless they received modern education. He was of the view that Muslims could not succeedin the field of Western politics without knowing thesystem. Taking active roles in education, religiousthought and politics, Sir Sayyid greatly affected thethinking systematics after him, especially M. Iqbaland Fazlur Rahman, and was also considered thefounding-father of Pakistan.
