Abstract

Katip Çelebi or Hadji Khalifa as known by the West, who has written numerous works on history, bibliography, geography and astronomy, is a remarkable Ottoman scholar and bureaucrat. Katip Çelebi's most striking aspect is his critique of ulama as being not aware of the importance of rational sciences and removing such sciences from madrasah's curriculum. In the twentieth century, this critique was given a central role by the historians of Ottoman science and thought in explaining the scientific regression in madrasah. This article contends that such use of Katip Çelebi's criticisms on madrasah ignores the historical conditions surrounding the age in which Çelebi made these criticisms and fails to evaluate Ottoman scientific tradition fairly.
