Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of high energy gamma rays released from radionuclides used in Nuclear Medicine Iodine-131 (I-131) and Flour-18 (F-18) on bone mineral density (BMD) in DEXA scan. Methods: Bone mineral density measurements were made by DEXA from L1-L4 vertebrae using dedicated quality control phantom and the corresponding BMD values. A homogeneous mixture was prepared by diluting different I-131 activity ranged from 0.5-5 mCi (18.5-185 MBq) into a water tank. Then, the vertebra phantom was placed on the tank. In the experimental setup, only the radionuclide activity was changing and the other geometric conditions were kept fixed along the acquired 6 scans. The same steps were repeated using F-18 radionuclide. Results: For reference BMD 1.00±0.05 gr / cm2 , I-131 BMD value according to the average of all activities 1.012 ± 0.034 gr / cm2 . For F-18 BMD value according to the average of all activities 1.016 ± 0.047 gr/cm2 . Conclusion: According to our results, it was determined that DEXA shots could be performed on the same day in diagnostic I-131 (
