Abstract
Object: We aimed to show changes in free radical metabolism and antioxidant defense systems elements in patients with schizophrenic disorder according to normal persons. Method: There were 48 patients who were diagnosed as schizophrenia according to DSM-IV for 2 years. We measured serum MDA(malondialdehyde), serum C and E vitamins and red blood cell GSH(glutathione) of patients and compared with 26 healthy persons. Results: Neurotoxic deformation caused by free radicals is shown by measuring lipid peroxidation's last product MDA level in the serum. These MDA levels were found higher where as serum vitamin C, serum vitamin E and red blood cell GSH level were found lower in patients with schizophrenic disorder. Conclusions: Differences between patients and normal persons according to these 4 parameters were found statistically significant. As a result, we can say that neurotoxic free radicals defects has an important role in schizophrenia physiopathology.
