Abstract

Summary: Alpha-Glutathione S-transferase ($alpha$-GST) is an izoenzyme of the Glutathione S-transferase family whose primary role is detoxification. To determine the possible clinical importance of serum $alpha$-GST levels in patients with chronic HCV infected patients, sera from thirteen patients with chronic HCV infection (10 male, 3 female) were assayed for $alpha$-GST, ALT, AST and HCV RNA viral load just before and on the 3rd, 6th and 12th months of interferon treatment. $alpha$-GST levels were found to be correlated with ALT and AST at all times but with HCV RNA viral load only at the last follow-up. The results of this study suggest that $alpha$-GST may be a potential indicator of chronic hepatocellular damage and response to interferon due to HCV in conjunction with ALT and AST levels.
