Abstract

Summary: Although it is known that high blood flow rates during hemodialysls increase solute clearance, there is not much data related to the effects of increased flow rate on the of erythrocyte membranes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of alterations in the blood flow rate during hemodialysis on erythrocyte deformability and membrane ATPase activities. The study was conducted by six adolescent chronic hemodialysis patients with a mean age of 13.2+2.4 years. Four dif¬ferent blood flow rates (150, 200, 250 and 300'ml/min) were applied to each patient during the first hour of four con¬secutive hemodialysis sessions, during which no ultrafdtration was performed. Hemoglobin, mean corpuscular volume, serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, erythrocyte deformability, and erythrocyte membrane Na*-lC, Ca++ and Mg++ATPase levels were measured before and at the end of the first hour of each hemodialysis session. Pre and postdi-alysis values of these parameters were compared for each blood flow rate. In addition, for each parameter percent of postdialytic change in different blood flow rates were compared. Statistical evaluation was done by Mann Whitney U test and Spearman correlation analysis. Postdialytic blood urea nitrogen and creatinine levels decreased significantly as the blood flow rate increased (p
