Abstract

When both Kalām and Sufism literatures are reviewed, it is seen that several classifying discourses were developed. In the article, this issue is discussed as a problem and, it is reached that the terminology used by these disciplines are the source of this situation. In addition, it is understood that, the difference in respect to the purposes of Kalām scholars and those of Ṣūfīs in examining the mind has fostered this problem. The Kalām scholars evaluate the mind mostly in terms of the formation of faith. In this context, they express their opinions about the mind from the points of reasoning and inference. Moreover, in the Sufism literature, on the one hand statements that vilify the mind have been found, on the other hand discourses that glorify the mind have been detected. It is seen that the tradition of discussing the mind with its different dimensions is also found in Kalām and is widespread among the Maturidis. At this point, it is possible to mention that there is a relationship between Kalām and Sufism, and especially that there is an interaction between the Maturidi tradition and the Sufism. A similar situation can also be seen in Ash‘arite tradition, especially in the example of Al-Ghazali. In this study, a descriptive-comparative method is used by taking into consideration the works in the antecedent period of Kalām and Ṣūfī disciplines, during which the intellectual structure of these disciplines reached a certain maturity, and evaluations are conducted upon it.
