Abstract
Hegel views that entire thought and historical reality is a result of a dialectical process. Reality as a whole as well as history of thought evolved from this absolute idea. This dialectical process is one that is rational and historical. In Hegel s philosophy, dialectic determines the contents of factual reality and thought. Hegel saw dialectical thinking or logic as an entity which is not a tool to grasp external reality only. Hegel called his philosophy as a system of science which aims to describe reality as it really is. Science focuses on the existing reality directly or within the dialectical process of every stage of consciousness while bringing and exhibiting the totality of reality in a systematic structure. Hegel argued that the content of existing reality is dialectical and rational in a way that its philosophy is based on rationality. He further described philosophy as a reality that is apprehended in the mind at the level of an objective science. Hegel argued that philosophy is an expression of reality notwithstanding believing that the history of philosophy is dialectical in unfolding the same reality as a total absolute Idea. Hegel formulated this entirety of thought; his system of science, which is closely associated with the philosophers views that came before him as a synthesis of thoughts. In this respect, Hegel only followed and represented the development of the Idea in the course of time. Dialectical process is the basis of all reality. Hegel described this process through the trilogy of dialectics. The initial stage of the system of science is the most abstract reality (which is in itself a situation). This stage consists of logic and ontology. Hegel started this system of development process with Being which is the basis of this process as the first general concept or category. Nothing and Becoming follows this first concept. At the same time this process corresponds with another triple phases which consist trilogy of phases the reason or developmental process of the dialectic thinking such as Abstract-Understanding, Dialectic-Negative Reason and Speculative-Positive Reason. Hegel considered that parallel to these phases of dialectic, there is the history of philosophy which includes the development of dialectical thought in history. Hegel s positive phase is called the Speculative Philosophy which, by himself, is distinguished from those abstract phases opposing each other. The dialectical progress that is a first one of these is called Traditional Metaphysic and then the second one is Critical Philosophy which is a negative stage that is a result of modern skepticism. The symbol of the final step of this phase is a reached at the stage of synthesis which is dissolved from its opposition to that in itself in the external-world. This study focuses on Hegel s interpretations of the beginnings of his system of philosophy and ancient Greek philosophy. Interpretations of Hegel s Geek philosophy is based on Hegel s system of thought which should be taken into consideration within his own system of philosophy so as to properly understand Hegel s systematic analysis of and commentary on Greek philosophy. The beginning of such philosophy overlaps with the beginning of the dialectical thinking process. For this reason, Hegel found that the beginning of philosophy and as well as dialectic in the philosophy of Parmenides constituted the most abstract conception of being. The beginning philosophy of history with Parmenides concept of being is also corresponded with the initial expansion of Hegel s system of philosophy or science. Hegel considered the original beginning of philosophy in Parmenides ontology as he evaluated the philosophy of Zeno and Herakleitos as the original basis of dialectical thinking along with Parmenides. According to Hegel, the original dialectical thinking started with Parmenides and Zeno s philosophy, followed by Herakleitos and Plato s philosophies that take the form of the objective content as pure science that reached its highest stage in ancient Greek philosophy. Hence, this article evaluates Hegel s commentary on philosophy of early philosophers in the context of Hegel s Being, Nothing and Becoming dialectic that corresponds with the question of reality. Furthermore, this study also aims to demonstrate how Hegel justified or confirmed his dialectical philosophy through his discussion of the history of ancient Greek philosophy.
