Abstract

Background: Nausea and vomiting are one of the most common complications during the post-operative period. The aim of the present study was to evaluate anti-emetic efficiency using the combination of dexamethasone and other commonly used antiemetic agents, haloperidol and metoclopramide. Methods: Group D was treated with 5 mg IV dexamethasone prior to the induction of anesthesia; Group DH was treated with 5 mg IV dexamethasone as a bolus prior to the induction of anesthesia and 2 mg IV haloperidol 15 minutes before extubation; Group DM was treated with 5 mg IV dexamethasone prior to the induction of anesthesia and 10 mg IV metoclopramide before extubation. Nausea-vomiting was assessed using the 5-point Verbal Descriptive Scale (VDS). Results: The evaluation of patients who experienced post-operative nausea and vomiting revealed significantly lower VDS scores in patients treated with DH or DM compared to patients who received the placebo (p
