Abstract

Background: The aim of the present study is to investigate the impact on male erectile function of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) performed on kidney stones.Methods: A total of 114 patients who had ESWL therapy between May-August 2012 evaluated were divided into 3 groups at the end of first month. Patients without kidney stones were in Group 1, patients who had residual fragments were in Group 2, and patients who required additional intervention were in Group 3. Patients' initial scores on the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF)-5 questionnaire were compared with results after completing the questionnaire again at the end of first and third months.Results: Mean age of 114 patients included in the study was 41.7 (range: 20-63) years of age, mean stone size was 16.5 (range: 10-25) mm. Differences in IIEF scores before and after treatment were evaluated and there was a statistically significant reduction in erectile function after the first month in all groups. IIEF scores of patients in Group 1 and Group 2 returned to initial values at the end of 3 months, and Group 3 saw additional reduction (p=0.039).Conclusion: We have to consider the increasing of sexual disfunction which depends on performing ESWL and additonal surgical interventions after ESWL.
