CRITICISM OF SOME TRAVELERS AND RESEARCHERS' CLAIMS REGARDING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF GUMUSHANE CITY

Özet

Son dönemlerde yerel tarih çalışmaları kapsamında Anadolu’daki şehirlerin adı, kuruluşu, idari ve sosyo-ekonomik yapısıyla ilgili çok sayıda çalışma yapılmaktadır. Bu çalışmaların büyük bir bölümü şehir tarihini mümkün olduğu kadar eskiye götürerek şehre artı bir değer katma gayretindedir. Gümüşhane tarihiyle ilgili yapılan çalışmalarda da bu refleksi görmek mümkündür. Ancak bu refleks bazen şehrin kuruluşuna ve ait olduğu medeniyete dair yanlış yorumlara neden olabilmektedir.Şimdiye kadar Gümüşhane şehrinin kuruluşuyla ilgili kesin ve net bir bilgi olmaması, konu hakkında farklı görüşlerin ortaya atılmasına neden olmuştur. Şehrin kuruluşu hakkında bazı yazar ve seyyahlar şehrin Grekler ya da Romalılar tarafından kurulduğunu iddia etmişlerdir.Çalışmanın amacı, kasabanın kuruluş ve gelişimi hakkında eleştirel bir bakış açısı ortaya koyarak bu iddiaların doğruluklarını tespit etmektir. Çalışmada başta Avrupalı seyyah ve yazarların bakış açıları olmak üzere şehrin kuruluşuyla ilgili ortaya atılan görüşler tartışılacak, Osmanlı resmi kayıtlarındaki veriler de göz önünde bulundurularak şehrin kuruluşu hakkında daha doğru bir sonuca ulaşılmaya çalışılacaktır.

Abstract

Recently, many studies have been carried out on thename, establishment, administrative and socio-economic structureof cities in Anatolia within the scope of local history studies. Mostof these efforts strive to add a surplus value to the city by takingthe city's history as far back as possible. It is possible to see thisreflex in studies on the history of the Gumushane city. However,this reflex can sometimes cause misinterpretations about the es tablishment of the city and the civilization it belongs to. Until now, the lack of precise and clear information about the es tablishment of the city of Gumushane has led to different opinionson the considered subject. As the foundation of the city is con cerned, some writers and travelers claimed that the city was founded by Greeks or Romans. However, it is un derstood that the information given by these peo ple about the establishment of the city is basedon deductions rather than historical evidence.However, considering the testimonies of travelerspassing through the region throughout history,the way the city was established, its architecturalstructure and the obtained archaeological re mains, one may conclude that the Gümüşhaneprovince was founded and developed during theOttoman period. The aim of the study is to establish the truth of these claims by providing a critical perspectiveon the city’s establishment and development.In the study, the views put forward on the estab lishment of the city, especially the perspectivesof European travelers and writers, will be dis cussed, and a more accurate conclusion will bedrawn about the foundation of the city by takingthe data into account in the Ottoman official rec ords.
