Abstract

Cities under the rule of the Ottoman Empire had a cosmopolitan social structure in the historical process. After the Edict of Tanzimat (1839) and especially the Edict of Reform (1856), which the Ottomans declared in the context of westernization attempts in the political and social fields in the XIXth century, places of worship belonging to non- Muslims, which formed a part of this social structure, increased. Although it is possible to talk about the existence of an Orthodox community in Anatolia with the separation of Christianity into sects, the population of people belonging to different sects, which were less common in the past, increased with various privileges given in the westernization process. Capuchins belonging to the Catholic sect, who were influential on the construction during the Westernization period, came to Anatolia within the scope of missionary activities and started building activities. However, the Catholic sect and its subordinate communities were able to build fewer churches than the Orthodox sect. The subject of the study is Giresun Kapusen Church, one of the rare church examples in the Black Sea Region, which was built in the first quarter of the XXth century with the support of France, the protector of Catholics. Churches that exhibit European identity in cities in various regions, designed with Catholic Baroque, Neoclassical, Neogothic and similar styles are known. However, the Giresun Kapusen Church, unique in the Black Sea region, differs by its Neogothic preponderant eclectic style. Within the scope of the study, the correspondence details in the documents accessed from the The Ottoman Archives of the Prime Minister’s Office, the project drawings of the building, the construction process and the design of the church in the period were evaluated, and its current architectural feature was introduced.
