Abstract
Objective: To study the opinions of physicians and nurses for the menopause and hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Study Design: The study was conducted in Ankara Numune Education and Research Hospital between 15th June 2002 and 15th August 2002. A questionnaire was given to all physicians and nurses who wanted to participate the study, regarding personal background characteristics, symptoms and problems of menopause, indications, benefits, risks and and duration of HRT. 183 female physicians, 288 male physicians and 336 nurses replied the survey. Results: HRT use by the mothers of physicians (26,0%) was significantly more than use of nurses' mothers (13,4%). Vasomotor symptoms and osteoporosis were the problems that were known by nearly all participants. But small percents of participants regarded ischaemic heart disease, Alzheimer's disease, urinary difficulties, vaginal problems and skin dryness as postmenopausal problems. There were differences in their views on benefits, risks and duration of HRT. Conclusion: Participants were positively inclined to hormone replacement therapy, but there were uncertainities in their opinions about the indications, benefits, risks, contraindications and duration of HRT. To optimize HRT use and compliance in the society, physicians and nurses may need to improve their knowledge about menopause and HRT.
