Abstract
Today, it is seen that post-modern tourists are turning to tourism activities that are more sustainable and can participate without harming the nature. In this context, the tourism sector has oriented towards more specific tourism trends rather than mass tourism. Geotourism, which is one of the sustainable alternative tourism types, is a tourism activity that includes the protection of geological heritage and educational features. Geotourism activities are carried out with the aim of transferring the remains, which are rare in the world due to their formation, to future generations with the understanding of sustainability, evaluating them within the scope of protection and usage measures and opening visits. Therefore, the main elements in geotourism are geology and geodiversity. It is important for the region and the country to transfer the Cappadocia fairy chimneys, which have a unique beauty due to their formation in Turkey, to future generations without being damaged and at the same time to use the formations as a local development tool. From this point of view, it is aimed to evaluate the geotourism tourism potential of the Cappadocia Region in this study. For this purpose, data were obtained by conducting field research and literature review to determine the geotourism potential of the Cappadocia Region. The data obtained were evaluated with SWOT analysis in order to determine the strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats of the Cappadocia Region for the development of geotourism activities. As a result of the research, it has been determined that the region can host different types of tourism apart from cultural and religious tourism due to the formations. However, the uniqueness of the region with its geological formations is the most distinctive and should be evaluated opportunity. In addition, the architectural structures in the fairy chimneys that do not match the regional texture and the applications that do not comply with the geological formations endanger the future of the region.
