Abstract
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the frequency of entire ovarian pathologies seen in autopsies referred to our institution, from cystic lesions seen so frequently, to solid lesions, and furthermore to investigate the ages of cases, whether the lesions are bilateral or unilateral, and the macroscopic and microscopic features of the lesions.STUDY DESIGN: Two hundred and twenty adnexa from 110 cases. between ages 12 to 70, which were autopsied at The Council of Forensic Medicine in 2001 and 2002 were randomly selected. Cases were evaluated for macroscopic and microscopic features of the ovarian lesions, age groups and cause of deaths.RESULT(s): Regarding the distribution of age, the reproductive group with ages 16-45 represented the largest group of our study, including 80 cases . The microscopic examination revealed 76 follicle cysts (69 %) within this group, 62 of them displaying bilateral localization. Luteal cysts were found in 13 (11.8 %) of the 80 cases, simple serous cysts in 12 cases (10.9 %), endometriotic cysts in 2 cases (1.8 %), mature cystic teratoma in one case (0.9 %), fibroma in 3 cases (2.7 %), and leukemia infiltration in one case (0.9 %).CONCLUSION(s): The present study is a preliminary study, carried out on limited cases. More reliable data on the distribution of ovarian lesions in autopsies will be obtained by studies performed on larger series.
