Abstract

Introduction: The postpartum period is the period when women are most likely to have psychiatric illnesses. Postpartum depression affects approximately 6.3%-50.7% of women who had just gave birth. As the onset of postpartum depression is insidious it can easily be overlooked if the patient’s seeking help is not supported, especially when the severity of postpartum depression is mild or moderate. The aim of the study was to determine the frequency of postpartum depression and investigate risk factors related with postpartum depression among mothers having a child aged 6 weeks-1 year old. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among mothers having a child aged 6 weeks1 year old between January 2017 and June 2017. A questionnaire on descriptive features and PPD risk factors; İzmir Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi Tıp Dergisi (Medical Journal of İzmir Hospital) 25 (2): 123-131, 2021 124 İzmir Eğitim ve Araştırma Hastanesi Tıp Dergisi (Medical Journal of İzmir Hospital) Edinburgh Postpartum Depression Scale were used for the data collection. Statistical analyzes were made using the SPSS 20 package program. P value below 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Two hundred and fity-five mothers were included in our study. The rate of postpartum depression was 30.6%. It was seen that postpartum depression was more often among mothers who were smoking and had unplanned pregnancy (p= 0.013, p= 0.001, respectively). Conclusion: The emotional link between the mother and the baby falls off seriously during postpartum depression. Therefore, early diagnose is very important and primary care physicians and other healthcare workers should be alert about the situation.
