Abstract
In our experimental study, both pre and post surgical treatment effects of octreotide (OCT), a somatostatin analogue, on mechanical intestinal obstructions have been evaluated. Forty female VV'istar Albino rats, were used in the study. Rats were classified into a control group and OCT group, each including twenty rats. Regarding to the aim of the study, each group underwent obstruction, resection + anastomosis and reexploration within certain periods. While the rats in the kontrol group were given isotonic saline solution from the first day to the last day of the experiment, the study group was given OCT in the same period. The results found were evaluated in theaspects of histopatological findings. In study group given OCT, the results in the early surgical period have been found statistically significant. We conclude that addition of OCT in surgical treatment of mechanical intestinal obstruction improves surgical success.
