Abstract

Surgical site infections (SSI) which increase morbidity, mortality, hospital stay and hospital costs of therapy following surgical interventions are the most important problems. The incidence and nature of SSI depends on the surgical equipment and the type of surgery. One of the prevention methods of surgical site infections is antimicrobial prophylaxis. Indications of antimicrobial prophylaxis are generally clean-contaminated and contaminated operations or clean operations with foreign implants. Appropriate antimicrobial prophylaxis must take into account the type of surgery. However, antibiotics should cover the common pathogens, which cause contamination at the surgical wounds. Rational antimicrobial prophylaxis reduces surgical site infection rates, but it does not replace good surgical techniques or rules of asepsis and antisepsis. We aimed to give some actual knowledge and practical tips of antimicrobial prophylaxis in this review.
