Abstract

In this study, five distinct scenarios are designed for cell planning and control in a real GT manufacturing system. In these scenarios, the effects of load-oriented order release approach are searched and simulation models including push type production system, Kanban and CONWIP based pull systems, and hybrid control policies are built. Load oriented order release is applied for the all scenarios except the first scenario, which uses traditional push system for production control. Second Scenario, which has a load oriented order release mechanism, uses push system like Scenario 1. They are both allowed to order batching to avoid long set-up times of machines. The Third Scenario is under push type control without order batching. In Scenario 4, CONWIP control policy is used. One-card Kanban model is structured in the last scenario, Scenario 5. Manufacturing lead time, cycle time, machine utilization, work-in-process and on-time deliveries are defined as performance criteria in order to evaluate scenarios. Considering simulation results, it is emphasized that whether "push" or "pull" production system is applied, using load oriented order release during the planning phase increases the system performance. In addition, pull systems have the higher throughput, shorter lead times and cycle times compared to push type systems.
