Abstract

The primary objective of the present work is to studythe effects of pozzolans on the mechanical and dura bility properties of concrete. Fly ash and granulatedblast furnace slag were used in the study. In order toutilize the potential of these materials and obtainbetter concrete performance, pozzolans with smallerparticle sizes were used, which were obtained bygrinding. The experimental study consists of two parts. In thefirst part, effects of ground fly ash on the concreteproperties were investigated. The effect of groundgranulated blast-furnace slag on the chloride diffu sivity of concrete was the main focus of the secondpart of the study. In the first part, a coarse F type fly ash was groundto a Blaine surface area of 604 m2 /kg. The test re- sults show that the physical properties such as den sity and fineness changed. The physical changes dueto grinding are: i) the fineness of fly ash increases,ii) there is a remarkable increase in density by re ducing the porosity of the fly ash particles, iii) thespherical fly ash particles transform into the mostlyirregular shapes; some small fly ash particles keeptheir original shapes. For investigating the effects of ground fly ash, eightconcrete mixtures were prepared using the samebatch of ordinary portland cement (OPC) andground low-lime fly ash. The aggregate gradingused in the mixtures of concrete, water-binder ratio, and the maximum particle size of aggregate werekept constant in all concretes, but the partial re placement of cement by fly ash was varied from 0 %(OPC concrete) to 70 %, in steps of 10 %. The re placement was on one to one weight basis. Com pressive strengths of the concretes were obtained fordifferent ages. Rapid chloride permeability test wasalso carried out on the 1 year old specimens. At 28 days, there was little reduction in compressivestrength up to 40 % cement replacement by groundfly ash; then significant decrease was recorded forthe further fly ash dosages. At 56 and 120 days, however, the compressive strength up to 40 % ce ment replacement by fly ash was almost identical tothat of the no fly ash concrete and for one year itwas even higher. Beyond 40 % replacement, thecompressive strength decreased significantly for theage of 1 year. The results of the rapid chloride pene tration tests indicated that high volume ground flyash concrete had much better resistance to the pene tration of chloride ions. The main objective of the second part of the experi mental study was to investigate the effect of groundgranulated blast-furnace slag on the chloride diffu sivity of concrete.Concretes with constant water/binder ratio wereproduced, in which an ordinary portland cementwas partially replaced by a ground granulated blast furnace slag with the replacement ratios of 40%,60% and 80%, respectively. The slag used had ahigh fineness with a Blaine specific surface of 5000cm2 /gr. Accelerated chloride diffusivity tests basedon migration testing were carried out on the con cretes. In parallel, testing of electrical resistivitywas also conducted. The resistivity of the concreteswere obtained by two different test methods; i) twoelectrode method, and ii) four electrode method. The concretes containing granulated blast - furnaceslag showed a significantly better resistance againstchloride penetration when compared to that of thepure portland cement. Results proved that slag re placement ratio is a major factor for reducing thechloride diffusivity and the diffusivity decreased withthe increasing slag amount. Incorporation of slaghad an important effect also on the electrical resis tivity of concrete and the resistivity of the concretescontaining slag were substantially higher than thatof the portland cement concrete. This increase inresistivity became more distinct with the increase inreplacement ratio. For a given type of concrete and test conditions, thetest results confirmed that there is a linear relation ship between chloride diffusivity and electrical resis tivity. Hence, as soon as this relationship is estab lished, the test results also confirmed that a monitor ing of electrical resistivity may be a very appropri ate way for monitoring the chloride diffusivity aspart of a general quality control during the concreteconstruction.
