Abstract

This study concerns changing urban open space activities, under the effect of rapidly progressing and widely spreading information technology. Urban squares are gathering places and these areas are organized harmoniously with existing human activities. In order to understand the degree of virtual open space activities, Taksim Square was chosen as a case study. In the first stage, Taksim Square was viewed throughout its history, evaluating the changes that occurred to the space and activities held there. In this stage, maps, archives, photographs were used to understand the changes. Interviews with expert persons provided more information regarding the nature and diversification of these activities. The square was observed at different times of the day and week in order to understand how people behave and how information technology has become a factor in changing the use of the space. Then a series of questionnaires were taken in the square; the results obtained show that cultural activities, banking services, and shopping are performed virtually. Other questionnaires were conducted at the buildings nearby the square, which provided more information about the nature of the existing relationships between surrounding buildings and the square. The results obtained from this study could be used in formulating new strategies for urban design.
