Abstract

Doorframes of Roman Era in Syria are similar with the examples in the other parts of the Empire. Architraves are taken as models for jambs and lintels; friezes and corniches provided models for lintel crowns. In this period door frame profiles are composed of fascia, kyma recta, ovolo and cavetto mouldings. The motifs (ex. ivy, rinceau, figural items) that were chosen for the frames do reflect the taste of the early periods. We could hardly say that there were any developments in the area of architectural decoration in Southern Syria during the Late Antiquity. Yet in Northern Syria evolution in door profiles and decorations is very distinct. The elements of profile get narrow and proportions clearly changed. Elaborated vegetal motifs were replaced by the stylized, geometric motifs. Similarities in architectural decorative elements of the buildings constructed by some Emperors lead the researchers to the subject of relations between Syria and Istanbul. This study could not come up with an answer that proves such a relation. The doorframes in the same period in Resafa and Qal’at Sim’ān do have quite a different appearance and profiling than the ones in Istanbul, yet do have a similar look with the con-temporaries in Syria. The mouldings of doorframes Istanbul do spread out in the early fifth century to many provinces of the Empire through the workshops of Marmara Island. However, in Syria doorframes continued to be decorated with local stone and in a style that have evolved.
