Abstract

Problems on constructional quality have effect on differing areas such as user health and safety, economy, sustainability, etc. These problems may occur due to design, construction/production and/or usage periods of building life cycle. The design phase, which constructional quality of the building is evaluated in detail while developing the design solution, has a major importance in preventing constructional quality problems. Performance in construction and usage periods should need to be evaluated in the design phase. However due to specialisation in building sector, architects usually face with problems while evaluating and adapting the materialisation technologies in respect to project specific conditions. Hence, constructional quality problems may occur in buildings. The aim of this study is to appraise the current situation in architectural constructional elements design, and to exhibit the main research subjects of primary importance for proposing design related solutions to overcome the effects of specialisation on constructional quality. In building sector, designers, construction organisations and building product manufacturers are the main specialisation groups. Since the priorities, methods, equipments, tools and products of each specialisation group differ, problems occur in producing the final product ‘the building’. Architects, while designing, usually prefer to use intuitive approach. In this approach, designer starts with a solution scheme that was previously used or known by experience, and adapts it to current project specific conditions. However, materialisation technology, covering both construction and manufacturing technologies, changes rapidly, and architects have minor control on these changes. Manufacturers standardise their products and production processes to increase efficiency, and also innovate them to protect their position in the market. Construction organisations also standardise and innovate their processes, tools and equipments for increasing efficiency and being competitive. Architects, while developing the design solution, should have to evaluate and use technically semi-closed system building products which are constantly improved by manufacturing organisations, and the proposed solutions should be buildable in terms of the methods, tools and equipments that are preferred and improved by construction organisations. However, the intuitive approach currently used in architectural constructional elements design and the deficiencies in information flow between materialisation organisations and designers prevent the proper use of right products and decrease the buildability of the design solution. In order to overcome this situation, it was seen that research studies should be conducted in the following areas; * developing design methods that are guiding the architects in using technological information in design, and *defining the content and form of the technological information proper to be used by designers. The approaches and methods used in design define the content and form of the information. Therefore the design process is considered in the second part of the study, and the analysis phase of the design process is investigated. Design process can be divided into three phases as; analysis, synthesis and appraisal. In analysis phase, the design problem is defined. In synthesis phase, solutions are generated for the design problem, and in appraisal phase proposed solutions are evaluated in respect to the requirements defined in analysis phase. Researchers emphasize that, a defined analysis phase taking place prior to snythesis is important in the quality of design solution. However, when the current situation in architectural practice is examined, there is no defined analysis phase in design of architectural constructional elements. Also, building programmes as the outputs of architectural programming phase, which is the equivalent of analysis in architecture, rarely cover requirements about architectural constructional elements. Therefore, conducting research studies for defining an analysis stage in architectural constructional elements design, and developing analysis methods have primary importance in proper use of materialisation technologies.
