Abstract
Mehmet Akif Ersoy, one of the leading figures of Turkish poetry and thought, used the river metaphor in his one poem. The metaphor in this context, is a means of comparison between the flow of river in time and the course of human- kind in history. He likens humankind to a fast-flowing river. In this analogy whilenations are brooks which join this main river, individuals are drops of these brooks. We also meet the river metaphor in the poem of Necip Fazıl. Neither ofthem inherited this usage of metaphor from the tradition of Classical TurkishPoetry. For the word river, expressed in Classical Turkish poetry by the word ofPersian origin jûy , in general refers to the tears shed by a lover after his beloved one. We also meet the river metaphor in the poems of Rûmî, Yahya Kemaland some other poets. Also german poet Goethe, in his praise written for Mohammed (Phub) likens prophet to a river. However this metaphor has been not only a subject of poetry only but also employed earlier by philosophical thought, mystical thought as well as by social analyses which try to understand humanacts. In short, the metaphor has been used by many disciplines as a means ofexpression.
