Abstract
In this paper a complete list of doctoral theses conducted in the Geology Department of Istanbul University is presented. Furthermore, they are evaluated in terms of their topics, supervisors and years of completion. The first doctoral thesis was completed in 1941. Until 2010,140 doctoral theses were conducted under the supervision of 26 professors, successfully. During the period from 1941 to 1958 both the number and continuity of the completed theses were limited, due to also very limited number of supervising professors. The time period from 1975 to 1997 can be distinguished as the period of highest performance. Professors Akartuna, Öztunalı, Altınlı, Baykal and Eroskay are those supervisors having the highest numbers of doctoral students. Namely, they have supervised 23,16,12,10 and 10 students, respectively.Based on the problems investigated, the doctoral theses have been grouped in six categories as General Geology-1 - General Geology-2 - Mineralogy and Petrology - Ore Deposits and Geochemistry - Petroleum Geology and Coal Geology - Applied Geology. Most of these 140 doctoral theses have been published in a foreign language as monographs and/or as papers in the Bulletin of Faculty of Sciences Serie B of Istanbul University.
