Abstract

Acute phase response occurs in infection, inflamation and tissue damage (joint diseases). Chronic infections and inflamations results in amyloidosis which is mainly seen in dogs and cats, and occasionally in horses and sheep. In acute phase response, the level of acute phase proteins in blood such as C-reactive pro¬tein, haptoglobin, serum amyloid A, fibrinogen and ceruloplasmin increases. Therefore, the meas¬urement of the level of acute phase proteins in blood during infection, inflamation and tissue dam¬age is important for the diagnosis. If the treatment has been tried, the success of the treatment can also be evaluated. In addition, infected carcasses in the slaughterhouses can be detected by meas¬uring the acute phase proteins before slaughtering. The aim of this rewiev is to summarize the studies in Veterinary field in acute phase pro¬teins. We believe that it will be useful to start using the measurement of acute phase proteins in diagnosis of diseases in domesticated animals.
