Abstract

In the present study, we aimed to investigate the effects of physical exercise on some physiological parameters such as haematocrit value (PCV), hemoglobin concentration, red blood cell count, heart and respiration rate, rectal temperature and plasma Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and Creatine kinase (CK) activities in young horses. Nine two-years old male English horses were trotted 5400 m in 10 minutes,on dry sand and closed manege. The changes in these parameters were investigated in blood samples, which were taken before (at 0 min.), right after (10 min.) and 5, 30 and 60 minutes after the end of exercise. Haematocrit value, hemoglobin concentration, red blood cell count, heart and respiration rate and rectal temperature increased statistically with exercise, in comparison to the preexercise levels. Haematocrit value, hemoglobin concentration, red blood cell count, heart and respiration rate at the 5th min of the recovery period were hig-her than that of the preexercise levels and at the 30th and 60th minutes of the recovery period, these values were lower than that of the pre-exercise levels, whereas these changes were found to be insignificant statistically. Starting from the"5th min. of the recovery period, rectal temperature was found to be lower than the baseline value and this decrease was found not to be significant statistically. Although a limited increase was determined in plasma CK and LDH activities with exercise, these increases were found not to be significant statistically in comparison to the baseline levels.
