Abstract
Summary: In this study, Salmonella enteritidis and Salmonella typhimurium were administered oral-ly to produce experimental infection in chicks. Ten, a day old chicks which were given 1x$10^{8}$ S. enteritidis that of 4 died on days 2, 5, 7 and 13 respectively. Animals died after the oral administration of S. enteritidis were autopsied and S. enteritidis was isolated from the liver, spleen caecal tonsils and intestinal content of the chicks. One and eight days old chicks which were given 1x $10^{4}$ S. enteritidis and S. typhimurium were observed for 8 weeks. None of the chicks died during this period. However, S. enteritidis and S. typhimurium were isolated from the cloacal swabs taken from the chicks 2 weeks intervals. Antibodies to Salmonella were detected in the sera of 1.07% of 278 broilers by ELISA but no antibody was by rapid slide agglutination test. Antibodies to Salmonella were detected in the sera of 17.1 % of 222 laying hens by ELISA. Antibodies were also detected in 6.7 % of same sera by RSA test.
