Abstract
Political and national movements that occurred among the Muslims of Rus- sia at the end of 19th century and in the beginning of the 20th century were perceivedas a threat by the Russian government. This threat brought the need of research andclose observation of the Muslims of Russia. The journal Mir Islama that was firstissued in St. Petersburg at 1912 in relation to the Ministry of Internal Affairs wasdesigned to serve this purpose. In the beginning, being edited by V.V. Barthold thejournal continued its academic studies; however, as this path was not seen useful forthe political purposes. D.M. Pozdneev took V.V. Barthold s place and the journal star- ted to follow the political purposes. Even though Mir Islama is an important sourceon the issues like jadidism, Muslim press, women s emancipation and the idea of unityamong the Muslims of Russia, the content of the journal is still a mystery to the Tur- kish academic society. This article, therefore, aims at presenting a critical evaluationof the journal as a scholarly, cultural and political source.
