Abstract

The morphological development of the Bosphorus region began at the Pliocene, associated with increasing tectonism in the area, possibly related to the activity of the North Anatolian Transform Fault. During this period regional uplifting occurred in the north and northeast, whereas collapse in the south and southwest. Stratigraphical and structural analysis from Paleozic through Neogene formations showed that the Istanbul Strait depression was formed being related to the lithology and the structure. The regional morphological landscape was mainly formed by NW - SE - trending normal faults and coeval N-S - trending microfaults and joint systems. N-S trending normal faults and similarly oriailted conlinous, intense and open joint systems may have been played an important structural role on the formation of present landscape. The strait has been developed in the limestone de¬pending on the NW-SE and N-S trending structures. Intense karstic structures throughout the limestones in and along the Istanbul Strait indicate long-term carbonate dissolution associated with fresh water - salty water interac¬tions. Water depth of the Istanbul Strait is shallow when passing from andesite and greywacke, whereas deep in the limestone, indicate that lithology - controlled bottom relief formation.
