Abstract

In the study area that lies at and around the Yesirçöl Mountain (NW of Erzurum), the Mesozoic and Cenozoic units are exposed. The lowest part of the sequence is composed of the Rizekent formation and the Koçdağı volcanics. These units that are of Late Jurassic age, are followed by the Büyükgüney formation of Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous age and the Yesirçöl formation of Early Cretaceous age. These are followed upward by the Başkurtdere formation of Cenomanian-Campanian age and the Kopdağ melange. The Serçeme formation of Senonian-Danian unconformably overlies the melange unit. The mentioned sequence is intruded by the Gölveren volcanics. The Keçitaşı formation of Eocene age unconformably overlies the Gölveren volcanics, and in turn is unconformably overlain by the Aşkale formation. This formation of Miocene age is divided into Gürleyintepe, Koşapınar and Meymansur members. The Aşkale formation is intruded and unconformably overlain by the Ziyarettepe volcanics. The Ziyarettepe volcanics of Late Miocene age in turn is unconformably overlain by the Gelinkaya formation. This unit of Pliocene age, in turn, is unconformably overlain by the alluvium of Quaternary age. In the region there is a sequence reflecting deepening depositional environment from Late Jurassic to Late Cretaceous. From Late Cretaceous onwards the region was under the compressional regime, and the emplacement of the Kopdağı melange is the result of this regime. The northeast-soutwest-trending folds, thrusts and strike-slip faults observed in and around the study area reveal that the region has undergone approximately north-south-trending compressional regime.
