Abstract

The African, Anatolian and Arabian plates form a triple junction that is considered to lie in the Maras and surrounding area. The aim of the study is to investigate present day tectonics acting in this region. For this, stress tensor analysis is applied utilising the P-and T- axes of 35 events occured in the region between 36°-38° N latitudes and 35°-38° E longitudes during 1951-2001. Thus, the characteristics of the faulting in the region are investigated. In addition, stress tensors are derived for 40 shallow and 20 deep aftershocks of 27 June 1998 Adana earthquake oblained from Ergin (1999). Moreover, a stress tensor analysis is obtained combining the whole aftershocks and the resull is compared with the stress tensor derived for the Maras triple junction region. Thus, it is examined if the 1998 Adana main shocks caused any changes in the characteristics of faulting (stress tensor) of the region or not. The stress tensor analysis was carried out using the method of Gephart (1990). The results we obtained are: 1-) The orientation of the pricipal stress axes azimuths and plunges for the Maras region are $sigma_1$=(358,18), $sigma_2$=(203,71), $sigma_3$=(90,8), 2-) The orientation of the pricipal stress axes for the whole afteschocks are $sigma_1$=(170,9), $sigma_2$=(17,80), $sigma_3$=(261,4), 3-) The orientation of the pricipal stress axes for the shallow aftershocks are $sigma_1$=(350,8), $sigma_2$=(80,86), $sigma_3$=(260,4), and 4-) The orientation of the principal stress axes for the deep aftershocks evenls are $sigma_1$=(87), $sigma_2$=(108,56), $sigma_3$=(273,33). The 10 degree bias between the stress tensors obtained for the Maras triple junction and the whole aftershock zone of the 1998 Adana earthquake is possibly because of the data oblained from different sources.
